We have already discussed what we think are the best Hollywood casino-themed movies but, what about our own Bollywood? Although not a popular genre, there have been some exceptional casino-themed Indian movies over the years.
Since gambling is prohibited in most states of India, maybe the producers and directors see no point in creating a casino-themed movie. This might be why there have not been any big casino-themed movies in Bollywood in recent years.
However, there have been multiple classic casino-themed movies in India and we will go through the most popular ones among them. Lastly, the movies on this list are in no particular order.
Teen Patti (2010)
The first movie on our list is the 2010 film Teen Patti by Leena Yadav. Starring Amitabh Bachchan as professor Venkat Subramaniam, the film tells a story of Perci and Venkat who join hands in applying probability to win at Indian card game of Teen Patti.
Indian actress Shraddha Kapoor and British actor Ben Kingsley also have significant roles in this movie. With most of the story set in London, viewers get to see countless London casino scenes. Although the movie received mixed reviews from critics, most viewers loved the movie.
Teen Patti game which is a form of Poker is one of the most loved card games in India. As the movie’s name suggests, there are several Teen Patti scenes in the movie.
Striker (2010)
Although not exactly a casino-themed movie, the main theme of the 2010 movie Striker is gambling. Chandan Arora directed the movie and it stars Siddharth, Anupam Kher, and Vidya Malavade among others.
When released, Striker flew under most people’s radars. After that, however, the movie has received lots of praise from the public and critics.
The movie did not do too well at the box office and it was also released on YouTube. Despite the movie’s poor performance at the box office, the movie received critical acclaim. Moreover, the movie has developed somewhat of a cult following in India.
Gambler (1971)
Let’s take you back to the 70s. Both of our movies in the list so far have been from 2010, however, the movie Gambler is a movie from 1971. Although an old-movie, this classic still makes for a great watch for casino lovers.
Starring Govinda in the lead role, the movie follows the story of Inspector Dayashanker and the event that follows after his overnight success of unearthing a criminal conspiracy.
Zaheeda, Shatrughan Sinha, and Silpa Shetty are among the other cast members of this classic action film. The gambling story will grip you and the music in this movie are among the best of its time.
Jannat (2008)
The fourth movie on our list is 2008’s crime/romance Jannat. The movie tells a story of Arjun Dixit, a young gambler who starts getting deep into the gambling business night after night. Although casino-themed, romance makes up the most part of this movie.
Emraan Hashmi who stars opposite Sonal Chauhan steals the show in the movie. It received mostly positive reviews from fans and critics. Furthermore, the movie became a huge hit worldwide.
There are several casino and gambling scenes in the movie which will definitely quench the thirst of casino movie lovers.
The Great Gambler (1979)
The 1979’s action thriller ‘The Great Gambler’ starring Amitabh Bachchan, Prem Chopra, Zeenat Aman, and Neetu Singh is another classic in this list.
The movie has everything you can ask for in an action thriller- gangsters, spies, secret agents, and undercover operations.
Although the movie was not received well at first, people have praised its cinematography and direction.
As the name suggests, gambling is one of the major elements in the movie. The movie has vintage Amitabh Bachchan with casino scenes- what’s there to not like?
