Blackjack: The Basics
Okay! Let’s check out the things you need to know before you sit at the table.
-Blackjack in casinos is played against the house.
-The goal of the game is to get yourself to 21 or close to it.
-Cards through 2 to 10 are of their original value.
-All face cards (J, Q, K) are of value 10.
-Ace is either 1 or 11, based on which benefits the players.
Blackjack: The Gameplay
In most Blackjack tables, there is a slot for 5-7 players excluding dealers. The important thing to understand here is your opposition is the dealer and dealer only, not the other players. You have no concern with other players, so keep that in mind.
For this gameplay, consider three friends Rohan, Ishan, and Salman are at the table with the dealer.
Dealer deals two cards face up to the friends and one card face down and another card face up to themselves.
Rohan got an Ace and a Joker. Ishan got a 2 and a 10. Salman got an 8 and a 5.
Remember how ace can be considered either one or eleven? Joker is a face card with a value of 10. Therefore, Rohan has 11+10=21. That there is Blackjack. Rohan gets his card taken away and gets paid.
Ishan on the other hand is very far from 21. He has got 2+10=12. Naturally, he wants another card to get close to 21. So, he demands another card from the dealer. This is what you call a HIT. The dealer gives another card to Ishan. This time it’s 10. Therefore, Ishan has a total of 2+10+10=22.
There you have it. Ishan got more than 21, so the dealer takes his card away and his bet too. In the Blackjack lingo, it is called “Ishan got busted.”
Salman has got an 8 and a 5. Therefore, his total is 8+5=13. Again, this is far away from 21, so Salman demands another hit. The dealer gives another card to Salman. This time the card is 7. So Salman got 8+5+7=20.
Now, Salman can do two things. If he thinks he will get an ace, he will demand another hit. However, Ishan is smart. He thinks the probability of getting an Ace out of all the cards in the next hit is low. Therefore, he decides to STAND.
“STAND” means Salman is content with his card and wants to take his 20 against the dealer’s cards.
Now dealer shows his second card and Hits or Stands as necessary. If the dealer got 21, then only he wins Salman. If not, Salman is paid off and the next hand starts.
I showed you three scenarios that are the most likely happenings in the game of Blackjack.
Blackjack: Additional Things
Aside from normal gameplay, like most games blackjack has some additional quirky rules too, which we will explain here.
SPLIT
This is done by players when they get a pair in their first 2 cards. Pair of any two cards, they can “split” it. They split the original wager too.
Say, Salman got two eights when the cards we first dealt and his wager was $50. Now Salman splits the cards and gets an additional one card each for two splits. Therefore, Salman has an eight and a seven at one split with a wager of $25 and an eight and a five for another wager of 25$.
What this does is allows you to play two different sets of cards. It increases your probability of winning.
DOUBLE DOWN
When you get the first two cards and think that one more card will comfortably put you to 21 or close to it and you are feeling really lucky, you double down.
People generally double down when they get 13, 14 and want to go big. It also depends on how great a first card the dealer has. If it is an ace or a ten on the dealer’s side, they generally refrain from doubling down.
BLACKJACK PAYOUTS
The blackjack (an ace card, 10 value card) will pay you 3:2. Whereas, if you win against the dealer then you get paid 1:1. There are plenty of other side bets available, but it depends upon the casino. However, for the beginner, it is better to refrain from the side bets and stick to the main game.
